HISTORY. Ya-Ping was born to a fairly average family in the Jiang clan. She was always very docile and quiet - most importantly, from the time she was a small child, it was very clear that she would grow up to be beautiful. She was often overlooked as a child, but when the news came around that the clan's prince needed a concubine, her parents were more than happy to offer her up. They insisted that she was a virgin, and that she was indeed old enough to be a concubine (as the only requirement was that she'd started menstruating). Fortunately, the prince seemed very taken with her, and so she was moved into the clan's palace to become his concubine. She was thirteen. Her first night as a concubine was the prince's fifteenth birthday. However, instead of bedding her, the prince decided to try to befriend her. This did help Ya-Ping feel more at ease with the prince, but, unfortunately, when she was inevitably asked if the prince bedded her, she had to say no. The next night, the prince did bed her, but he made it clear that he wanted her to be comfortable - and that he wasn't very comfortable with the idea of having a concubine (which may in part have been due to Ya-Ping's age). He told her that he had to do this - which Ya-Ping already knew. She assured him that it would be fine, and that she'd read up about what to do. Over the years, the prince succeeded in befriending Ya-Ping (in addition to her remaining his concubine), and she has almost taken a wife-like role for him. However, she knows very well that soon enough, the prince will be made to marry - and that, most likely, it won't be very long. Of course, some wives allow their husbands to keep concubines, but there's no guarantee. However, Ya-Ping has no idea what she'd do if she weren't allowed to be the prince's concubine anymore.
