TO: Alphonse Elric FROM: Mei Chang How’s it going? Dear Alphonse,
I miss you already! I wish I could be there with you now, but Ling’s being stupid and won’t let me go see you. Maybe later. But I thought that maybe we could talk by letters, while I’m waiting for my Clan to say I can come and visit!
So how have you been doing with having your body back? I’m so glad that you’re finally yourself again! But your body seemed so weak when Edward brought it back, so have you been okay? I’ve been worried that you’ll get sick or something and your body won’t be able to fight it off, so please be careful! You can’t get sick now! I was wondering if maybe we could keep doing the Alkahestry lessons another time. It was fun teaching you how to do it, and I wouldn’t mind helping again! Of course we’ll have to wait until you’re up to full strength first! I have a bunch of yucky politics to do, too, and I’m gonna be meeting my siblings without us trying to kill each other. It’s gonna be so weird…
How has everyone else been doing? How's your brother adjusting to not having Alchemy? Is Winry doing fine? How about the state of the political atmosphere? It takes quite a bit to get information over here, and since I'm not high on the priority list unless Ling tells me or it directly pertains to me, which is practically nothing, I don't know much! It's not fun!
Anyway, I just wanted to see how you were doing! I’m not supposed to be writing letters right now, and actually practicing protocol, so keep it on the down low that we’re writing, okay? Some of my servants will be happy to smuggle the letters, but the Clan won’t be happy… Oh well, I hope you’re having fun with your body! Love, Mei

TO: Mei Chang FROM: Alphonse Elric I'm so sorry... Dear Mei,I just now got your letter... I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to reply! I suppose that the post between Xing and Amestris is especially slow. I've never asked... where in Xing is your clan located? Perhaps that has some bearing on that, though I imagine the desert is mostly to blame.
I've been doing well, thanks. It's been a bit difficult, but it's doable. Everyone around me is constantly worried about me overexerting myself, but I don't think that that's a problem; I know my limits better than anyone, and I know not to make myself too exhausted. As for illness... I've been fine so far, and if I keep eating and exercising (well, mostly walking) as I am, I should be fine. It rarely gets cold where I live, so I don't really need to worry about most viruses that seem to float around places like Central City in the winter.
I would love to continue learning alkahestry! It's really interesting! But you're right, you should wait until all of those politics are over. How many siblings do you have? It would be so weird for me and Ed to constantly try to kill each other, so... I guess that I can see why the opposite would be strange for you. I hope that it went well. (I'm assuming it's past now, or will be, once you get this letter).
Ed's adjusting pretty well. I'm pretty sure that it's just because I've got my body back and am fairly healthy again - I know he'd have given up anything to get my body back, and I'm really glad that it was his alchemy rather than his life. He still forgets, sometimes, but he's never very upset about it. Winry's also doing well; she's in Rush Valley at the moment, and she comes home every so often. When she does, she always makes apple pie. I've developed some skill with cooking, but no one can make apple pie like Winry can.
As for politics, as I'm sure you know, General Mustang isn't the führer, but, instead, it's his former commanding officer, Grumman. They share many of the same ideals, and the country is certainly heading in the right direction. The General and everyone else involved in the coup d'état decided that it was better to have a senior officer take the seat of führer as opposed to a young one like General Mustang. (Can you believe that he's a brigadier general at only thirty-one?)
General Mustang is set on making amends with Ishval, and Führer Grumman seems to be in full support of that. Scar and Major Miles are both helping him - so far, it seems to be working pretty well, though there are some obvious difficulties, such as public reception. The war was sort of... glorified here. Amestrians were told that we were doing the right thing and that the Ishvalans needed to be taken care of. That mindset's still present in a lot of Amestrians, so it's a bit more difficult than the people involved in the effort would like it to be.
Overall, I'm doing well. How are you? Is Ling keeping his promise to protect your clan? Don't worry, I doubt anyone around here would tell anyone who could get you in trouble. Write me back soon, okay? It's really nice to hear from you! Sincerely yours,Alphonse

TO: Alphonse Elric FROM: Mei Chang Gong Shou! Dear Alphonse,
That’s fine! I wasn’t expecting your letter super quickly, because even with the distance you’re probably busy so don’t worry. The Chang Clan is actually on the middle/far-end from Amestris, so it makes sense though I have been more at the Palace than in my Clan Compound. Considering the fact that the Yao Clan is in charge now, even if it’s been peaceful, the Elders have wanted me to try to get an edge up (considering my clan’s on the bottom rung), so I’ve been studying there. The palace is nice, though, so I haven’t really minded.
Ah, I’m sorry that I asked an oft-repeated question, then! Still, I’m glad you’re doing great, I was worried. Just keep doing what you’re doing then, kay? I’ve been trying to talk the Elders into letting me come visit, though I haven’t been exactly mentioning you, and have been connecting it with political reasons, and such nonsense. So far, they’re not too inclined towards, but I can hope! So have you been able to go and visit other places? Or do you still have to stick around Resembool? I would imagine the latter, but if you can make it to the train…
Yes, it already did happen, and it was about as awkward as I thought it would be. I actually have 42 half-siblings, including Ling, and it was really strange to talk somewhat civilly to those that I’ve faced at knifepoint before. Still, it wasn’t too bad, and I actually got into a pretty good conversation with the 21th Prince about pandas. He has a few back at the Han Clan Compound, and he was fascinated with Xiao Mei! She liked the attention, too. It was still sort of stuffy, though. I don’t like the formal events very much, whenever I have to attend them. If I had you or Mr. Scar or one of my other friends there, it would’ve been better!
Yes, I can imagine you’re glad it’s the Alchemy! Is he planning on rejoining the military (obviously not as a State Alchemist), or staying a civilian? It would probably be very different to be a civilian again, after… How long was it, exactly? I know that he joined at twelve, from what I heard before I met you, but that was all I got. I’m glad to hear that Winry’s doing well, too. Oh, is apple pie your favorite? I like apples, though I’ve never had apple pie myself… And I’m sure your cooking’s just great, Alphonse! I’d love to try some when I pop by for a visit!
Woah, he’s that young? I didn’t realize that! I’m glad that both of our countries are shaping up well, though! Even though it was tragic and hard, the Homunculi and Philosopher’s Stones did have a good impact overall, I guess. Funny how our countries are opposite on the leaders, though; Xing was quite happy to have Ling as the Emperor, even if he’s just a bit older than you…
What about the Ishvalans, though? Have they been receptive to General Mustang, or… not so much? I can see where the Amestrian thinking is coming from, though, especially if they’re so used to it… Besides, it’s always hard to admit that the Government and leaders that you’ve been following are wrong, especially with all the changes already taking place. There’s been peace, though, right? Nobody protesting against the changes or the Ishvalans, at least publically? There have been a few whispers of people not liking the Clans being equal now, around Xing (though they haven’t actually done anything! And hopefully won’t ever!), so I wondered if it was the same there.
Yeah, Ling’s definitely been keeping his promise! It’s surprised me, actually. The Chang Clan is kind of looked down upon, considering we’re pretty much the poorest clan, but we’ve been getting aid to get back on our feet, and we haven’t been reviled, so it’s great! The Elders are getting a bit of a big head over it, but considering what I’ve seen of other Clan Chiefs and Elders (We currently don’t have a Clan Chief, at the moment), they’re not that bad.
I’ve been doing great, though, Alphonse. Been learning a lot, and I’m currently tackling political manipulation stuff, so I’ve been fine, and I’m glad you’re doing well. I love to hear from you, too, so write back as soon as you can! Miss you!
Love, Mei
